Soft focus, achieved with a diffusing filter,
is useful for portraiture,
as it gives skin a soft, unwrinkled smoothness.
A must buy?

Hmm... no. A warming filter, yes. A diffusing filter can be achieved with software, but you can't un-diffuse using software. So ... no.
